We asked Dr. Arumugam!

What would your patients say about you?

That I am caring, attentive and kind. I strive to provide the best care for my patients in a reassuring and confident manner.

When should a parent consider taking their child to an obesity expert?

Parents should consider taking their child to an obesity expert when their BMI (Body Mass Index) is consistently above the 99th percentile for their age. Also, if the child or teen is experiencing weight-related comorbidities such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, liver disease or sleep apnea. Treatments such as diet, exercise, lifestyle modification, medications and surgery are all options we explore together.

How did you come to live in New Jersey?

I was born and raised in New York. I completed my surgical training in New Jersey and felt this was a great place to continue my career and raise my children.

Jersey Shore University Medical Center offered me the perfect opportunity to pursue my interests in bariatric and minimally invasive surgery. I enjoy seeing patients recover and improve quickly after surgery, as well as achieve better overall health after weight loss.

I am an avid fan of the outdoors, the beach, and the parks that New Jersey has to offer.
