Meet Alicia Cohen of Colorwise! - Morris Bernards Moms

Where are you from originally and how long have you lived in the area?
My husband and I were living in West Caldwell for 6 years, before we moved to Randolph in 2021.

How many children do you have and what are their ages?
We have one daughter, Harper, who will be 7 in April.

Can you tell us about your business venture?
I wanted to make the process of choosing paint colors stress-free and fun for my clients. I realized I loved working with paint colors during my own home renovations, and I also discovered that so many people struggle with making those decisions. I decided to offer this service through my business Colorwise, to provide value to homeowners, as painting mistakes can be very costly, but I also work directly with painters, contractors, realtors, etc and can help them add that same value for their clients.

How did you become a Certified Color Expert?
I took an intensive online course, through a company called Home Staging Resource. They offer various design accreditations, which are also recognized by Benjamin Moore and Sherwin Williams. I am a designer representative for both brands, and continue to attend industry trainings and conferences to stay on top of current trends in color and design.

Can you tell us about the services you offer?
I offer in-home personalized consultations. (Most of my clients are residential, but I have done commercial work as well) I curate and edit a selection of large sized color samples (not available for consumers in-store) that we have the benefit of viewing in the actual space, with the right lighting, and working with the other finishes in the home. In addition to paint, I have also worked with my clients on choosing tile, flooring, countertops, window treatments, furniture, and décor. While I am not an interior designer by trade, I can offer help and guidance on these decisions for a fraction of the cost.

Have you always been involved in art & interior design?
I worked as an Account Executive in fashion for 15 years. I had the opportunity to work directly with designers to develop merchandise for retailers, from TJ Maxx to Saks. Product merchandising with an eye for color was something I always enjoyed, and it was fun to transfer those skills to the home design world.

If someone is looking to get started with a Certified Color Expert, where would they begin?
Give me a call! I am ultimately here to help execute my clients’ vision (and if they don’t have one, I can help with that too)! It’s a very collaborative process that starts with me understanding what my clients hope to accomplish.

If you could give one tip to fellow Mom Entrepreneurs what would it be?
As women, we sometimes suffer from imposter syndrome. This was something I struggled with when I set out to start a business, but do not let it limit you. As you grow, you will gain more and more confidence, but I want women to know they are more than enough!
